1 〔とりたてて〕 especially; specially; particularly; in particular.

●彼女はことさら(に)やつれた様子もなく戻ってきた. She didn't look particularly [noticeably] tired and haggard when she got back.

●それはことさら(に)問題にするほどのことではない It's not such a big problem [issue]. | It's not a specially big problem.

・彼の言動にはことさら(に)目立つところはなかった. There was nothing particularly striking [noticeable] in his language or behavior. | He didn't do or say anything particularly striking.

・首相の責任はことさら(に)重大だ. The Prime Minister bears especially heavy responsibility. | The Prime Minister's share of responsibility is particularly grave.

2 〔故意に〕 intentionally; knowingly; deliberately; wittingly; designedly; on purpose; purposely; 〔わざわざ〕 at the expense of extra effort.

●ことさらに大声でわめく scream loudly on purpose.

●ことさらにやった訳ではない. I didn't do it on purpose [intentionally].

・ことさらに問題を複雑にする必要はない. Don't make extra work for us by adding needless complications to the problem.

・他人の家庭事情をことさらに話題にしたがるのは自分の家庭がうまく行っていない人だ. It is people from unhappy homes who go out of their way to talk about other people's family circumstances.

・彼は人前では彼女に対してことさらに素っ気ない態度を取った. He treated her with studied indifference to her in front of other people. | He intentionally treated her coldly when there were other people there.

・彼の来日は非公式なものだから, ことさら歓迎行事は要らない. His visit is an informal one, so there is no special need for [we needn't go out of our way to provide] a formal reception.
